The original rev had two issues that were immediately noted by BSVi. First, the starting directory was hardcoded to c:\temp with no error checking, which caused the program to bomb if that directory didn’t exist. Second, the device was only searching for FTDI interfaces with the labels FT232B or FT232R, whereas BSVi’s interface was custom and used his own ID string.
This new version allows for the user to enter a custom string for matching the FTDI interface, as well as the ability to continue if the c:\temp directory is not found. Put yer custom string in the textbox right beneath the “Find All FTDI Interfaces” button.

Well if you’ve read in our First and Second Articles on the cheap little 1.5″ digital photo frames, we’ve started some hacking attempts. So far, we’ve lucked upon the Vendor’s official SDK, which consists of the source code for the whole damn device! plus some miscellaneous tools that will help in development.
Long story short, their firm built fine for us with some makefile cleanup – those issues may, of course, be due to our own incompetence. But if it doesn’t build for you first time, you might as well read about our trials and tribulations in hopes of getting you up to speed a little quicker.  Hardy har har.. On a whim, we decided to enter the hardware bootloader mode by holding the MENU/POWER button while resetting the device. The vendor flash tool supplied in the SDK mentioned in our first DPF article worked like a charm!
We reflashed our COBY DP-151 with the generic firmware pre-built in the SDK. It ran OK, but the display was in portrait mode and appeared to be configured for the wrong LCD as the screen was dark and low contrast – almost unreadable.
To recover from this “wrong firmware” semibrick, we simply entered hardware bootloader mode again, and flashed the entire 2MB dump generated by Dermaik’s dump tool that we posted in the first article.
